This paper is concerned with facilities based on plasma-cathode (PC)
electron guns which are intended to produce stable focused electron
beams. The principle of operation, the design and the characteristics of
the guns are described and the results of using plasma-cathode guns for
electron-beam deposition of powder coatings are presented. A facility
capable of producing strongly focused (0.25 to 0.2 mm in diameter)
electron beams of power up to 6 kW and energy up to 50 keV is described.
Further are presented the results of preliminary experiments with a lowvoltage
(60 kV) electron beam which was projected into open atmos -
phere, i.e. non-vacuum conditions. The potential directions of development
of non-vacuum electron beam technologies using PC gun technology
are discussed.
